I was on this for about a year before I conceived my daughter. I came off of it somewhere between 2 to 3 months before I conceived her. She was born with symbrachydactyly and was wondering if the paxil could have caused it. When the time comes and she has questions I want to provide full dosclosure. If there is even a chance that this could be the reason I want to know. Thank you.

The use of paxil during pregnancy has been monitred for some time and the FDA has had statments concerning it. I do not know of an assocation at this time of limb differnces related to Paxil. Heart issues such as ASD and VSD ( heart defects) and Pulmonary hypertension have been implicated but I am not knowledgable enough about those issue to speak about them. There is a longstanding well Known association in certain conditions of upper limb differences and heart and kidney problems owing to the timing of the differentiation of the hand and upper limb and the formation of those organs in utero with respect to the number of weeks into a pregnacy that these features form. Thus if your child has a hand or upper limb difference the physician knows to double check for heart and kidney issues or history. But the reverse may not be true, in other words risk for heart issues that is avoided does not confer risk for hand issues .

I know thats a mouthful. That being said It seems to me that if this drug which had been so well studied for its effects on heart and circulation issues had a significant effect on the hand that it would might have been noticed

You can look at the fda bulletins http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/DrugSafetyInformationforHeathcareProfessionals/ucm085313.htm
    http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2005/ucm108527.htm

But you need to speak with your pediatrician first and foremost and the the physican who prescribes your own medications.

Finally symbrachydactlyly has an implication of a spontaneous event that amy be due to blood flow and perhaps leads to the hand differences and no known link to its has validly been established as to its true cause...and soetimes the diagnosisi of symbrachydactlyly is wrong ie its a diagnosis that is given to a lot of hand differences when in fact Poland syndrome, and other diagnoses may be more specific.

Also as a general disclaimer any and all decisions about medication and pregnancy should only be made after carefully consulting all your physicians involved in the care of you, your unborn child if you are pregnant and your child.

Thank you for responding. I was off the medication before becoming pregnant. My OB was made aware of how long I was on the medication and how long I had been off the medication. I also think that the medical community is just scratching the surface with this type of medication and it's effects. I also would assume that studies done have been on women who actually took paxil during pregnancy, which i did not. I suppose at the end of the day I'll never know.
