Hi all, my son is 29 months old and was born with symbrachydactyly affecting his left hand. He has a small palm, a little thumb, and four nubbins. The thumb has bone at the base, but not above the knuckle joint. I have read about people with similar hands having surgery to deepen the web between the thumb and palm in the hopes of making it more functional. In my son's case, the part of his thumb with bone is not able to move independently, so he cannot use it in an opposeable way. Overall, he is able to do absolutely anything that he puts his mind to and manages beautifully, which is why we have not pursued surgical options so far (though we have met with a few pediatric orthopedists). I am wondering if any of you have opted for the web deepening surgery, and if so, at what age, and how has it changed your child's hand function? Thanks so much!
